چکیده

1. Wind power plants represent a risk of bird mortality, but the effects are still poorly quantified. We measured bird mortality, analysed the factors that led birds to fly close to turbines, and proposed mitigation measures at two wind farms installed in the Straits of Gibraltar, one of the most important migration bottlenecks between Europe and Africa. 2. Bird corpses were surveyed along turbine lines and an associated power line to estimate mortality rates. The behaviour of birds observed within 250 m of turbines was also recorded as a putative indicator of risk. The effects of location, weather and flight behaviour on risk situations (passes within 5 m of turbines) were analysed using generalized linear modelling (GLM). 3. Mortality caused by turbines was higher than that caused by the power line. Losses involved mainly resident species, mostly griffon vultures Gyps fulvus (0·15 individuals turbine − 1 year − 1 ) and common kestrels Falco tinnunculus (0·19 individuals turbine − 1

Mortality at wind-farms is positively related to large-scale distribution and aggregation in griffon vultures

Wind-farms have negative impacts on the environment, mainly through habitat destruction and bird mortality, making it urgent to design predictive tools to use in landscape planning. A frequent assumption of wind-farm assessment studies is that bird distribution and abundance and bird mortality through collision with turbines are closely related. However, previous results are contradictory and q...

Copyright K. Shawn Smallwood 2006 BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF REPOWERING A PORTION OF THE ALTAMONT PASS WIND RESOURCE AREA, CALIFORNIA: THE DIABLO WINDS ENERGY PROJECT

WEST, Inc. (2006) reported on the first year of fatality monitoring in the Diablo Winds Energy Project, which replaced 169 vertical axis wind turbines with 31 larger horizontal axis wind turbines in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area (APWRA). WEST, Inc. also compared bird utilization and mortality in the project area to utilization and mortality reported by Smallwood and Thelander (2004) acro...

Offshore Wind Energy and Noise Monitoring

An important implementation issue for wind farms is the risk of bird collision. A lot of the existing knowledge on birds and wind energy is based on studies at onshore sites. With respect to wind energy implementation especially offshore, more information about the environmental impact is needed. Several countries carrying out environmental base line studies focuses on offshore wind farm sites....

Using Wind Tunnels to Predict Bird Mortality in Wind Farms: The Case of Griffon Vultures

BACKGROUND Wind farms have shown a spectacular growth during the last 15 years. Avian mortality through collision with moving rotor blades is well-known as one of the main adverse impacts of wind farms. In Spain, the griffon vulture incurs the highest mortality rates in wind farms. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS As far as we know, this study is the first attempt to predict flight trajectories...

A Comprehensive Analysis of Small-Passerine Fatalities from Collision with Turbines at Wind Energy Facilities

Small passerines, sometimes referred to as perching birds or songbirds, are the most abundant bird group in the United States (US) and Canada, and the most common among bird fatalities caused by collision with turbines at wind energy facilities. We used data compiled from 116 studies conducted in the US and Canada to estimate the annual rate of small-bird fatalities. It was necessary for us to ...
